Altrus is a residential service provider to the aged and developmentally disabled in GA
Altrus provides group and family model personal care homes throughout Georgia. In addition Altrus is also a CARF accredited DD Host Home provider. Since 1989, Altrus has remained committed to helping Georgians delay or avert more costly nursing home and institutional placements. Through Georgia’s Medicaid waiver programs, low income Georgians are provided with the opportunity to receive quality personal care home and host home placement. All services are monitored by Registered Nurses. All homes are licensed and regulated by the State of Georgia Healthcare Facility Regulation Division.
Our community-based services provide Georgians of all ages with the opportunity to receive quality care in an assisted living home environment. We serve in assisted living group model and assisted living family model home settings. This allows people to remain in the community longer and results in a better quality of life.
A member of the board of directors of a Savannah-based healthcare company has been recognized for her contributions to nursing by Mercer University’s Georgia Baptist School of Nursing. Mary Georgia Mohr, of Thomson, Georgia, a director of Altrus, Inc., was presented the Flame Award at the Georgia Baptist 25th Anniversary Alumni Day in Atlanta on Oct. 17th.
The award recognizes alumni of the college for their accomplishments in clinical nursing practice, community health service, excellence in mentoring, health care administration, leadership in health policy/ethics/law, nursing education and entrepreneurial leadership.
“Certainly, Mary Georgia Mohr is most deserving of this meaningful award,” said Martin Miller, President of the Altrus Board of Directors.” She has been all about improving the lives of seniors her entire career, which began long before she became an entrepreneur in the assisted living field. With Mary Georgia it, was always about the people before it was about the business. She has touched a lot of lives and made a lot of lives better.”
A 1959 graduate of Georgia Baptist School of Nursing, Mrs. Mohr moved back to her home town of Thomson in 1969 to raise her family. There she turned a Director of Nursing job at a small community skilled nursing facility into a career as a pioneer in nursing services.
Mohr’s insight and experiences led her to recognize the value of the Alternative Health Services Program while it was in its infancy in Georgia. She went on to help establish the licensing of a six-bed personal care home that provides accommodations, nurse supervision and assistance with daily activities for residents. As services grew, so did the number of individuals seeking these types of living arrangements as an alternative to nursing homes.
Mohr’s company, Altrus, Inc., has grown into a multi-faceted alternative living services company, with multiple Senior Living Group homes of 11 to 24 beds; Family Model Senior Living homes with six beds or less; and one- to two-bed host homes for seniors and individuals with disabilities across the state. Altrus improves quality of life for those who are aging or disabled and cannot live independently without assistance.
Along with the growth of Altrus has grown the need to look closely at the regulations governing alternative living services. Mohr was asked to serve on a task force to work with Georgia’s Office of Regulatory Services to help rewrite alternative living service regulations. Mohr’s colleagues now follow in her footsteps, continuing to influence the creation of services that improve quality of life within the least restrictive environments possible.
